Research

At the heart of our mission is the belief that groundbreaking academic research is essential to ensuring AI benefits all of humanity, not just a privileged few. Our Research Grants program is designed to empower scholars and scientists who are tackling the most pressing challenges at the intersection of AI and social justice.

We provide funding, resources, and a collaborative network for projects that move beyond theory to create tangible, real-world impact. We are particularly interested in research that explores how innovative technologies can be harnessed to bridge divides and empower marginalized communities.

Examples of Funded Research Include:

  • Edge AI for Agricultural Justice: Developing low-cost, offline-capable AI models that run on simple smartphones to help smallholder farmers analyze soil health, predict pest outbreaks, and access fair market prices without relying on costly infrastructure.

  • Bias Detection in Resource-Limited Settings: Creating novel algorithms to audit automated decision-making systems (e.g., for public benefits or loan applications) for discriminatory biases, with a focus on efficiency that allows for deployment in government agencies with limited computational resources.

  • Federated Learning for Community Healthcare: Pioneering privacy-preserving AI techniques that enable the development of predictive healthcare models for disease outbreaks by learning from data across multiple remote clinics without centralizing sensitive patient information.

  • AI-Enabled Legal Aid Tools: Building and studying open-source natural language processing tools that can help non-profit organizations automate the screening and intake process for individuals seeking legal assistance, dramatically expanding access to justice.

We seek to fund bold ideas that demonstrate how technology, especially practical solutions like edge computing, can be a direct force for equality. If your research is aimed at creating a more just world, we invite you to join our community of innovators.
